Cochrane Hong Kong established in April 2019 at The Nethersole School of Nursing, Faculty of Medicine, The Chinese University of Hong Kong is the second nursing-led Cochrane affiliate/centre in the world, aiming to promote and support the use of Cochrane evidence in health policy and practice in Hong Kong and nearby regions. Cochrane Hong Kong is also a part of the Cochrane China Network ensuring that Cochrane’s evidence is increasingly used in policy and practice inside China; supporting the Cochrane community of volunteers in China; and promoting and representing Cochrane in the country.
Since 2019, Cochrane Hong Kong has been leading the Nursing Working Group of the Cochrane China Network to initiate local and national collaborative work to expand the scope, reach and impact of Cochrane evidence on nursing and healthcare practice, to facilitate dissemination and application of high-quality evidence into nursing practice, and to build capacity for Cochrane Review production.

- To build capacity for Cochrane Review production and facilitate dissemination and application of high-quality evidence into practice.
- To provide consultancy services on improving clinical effectiveness and outcomes.
- To assist institutions and policymakers in making evidence-based decisions in health care.
- To initiate regional and international collaborative work to expand the scope, reach and impact of Cochrane evidence on health care practice within and across disciplines.
III. Cochrane Hong Kong Website
As a Cochrane affiliate, Cochrane Hong Kong maintains its own website, providing background information about Cochrane Hong Kong, reports on our past events, news on upcoming training and activities, Cochrane training resources and publications. The Cochrane Hong Kong website is not only a platform to let others know who we are and what we do, but also an evidence dissemination platform to make the trusted Cochrane evidence more accessible to those needing to make informed decisions for health care and practice. The translation of Cochrane press releases and featured systematic reviews are kept updating on our webpage to answer the needs of front-line health care workers, decision makers and the public.
IV. Work of Cochrane Hong Kong
Cochrane Evidence Translation
Cochrane Hong Kong has been working with the Translation and Dissemination Working Groups of Cochrane China Network and Cochrane Taiwan in translating Cochrane evidence into simplified and traditional Chinese adopting the Knowledge Translation Framework developed by Cochrane. Cochrane Hong Kong has translated more than 100 abstracts/plain language summaries of Cochrane Reviews since August 2019. Additionally, Cochrane Featured Reviews and Cochrane Blogshots with topics covering stroke, effective practice and organisation of care, schizophrenia, dementia and cognitive improvement, incontinence, etc. have also been translated into traditional Chinese to promote the dissemination of Cochrane evidence locally.
Cochrane Review Production
To support Cochrane evidence production, nine Cochrane Reviews on mental illness care and therapy, stroke survivors care, perioperative recovery for patients with gynaecological cancers, and health consultation patterns and effectiveness are complete/ongoing in Cochrane Hong Kong. Many non-Cochrane systematic reviews have also been produced by our team to promote evidence-based health care practice and decision-making. A selected collection of publications over the past several years can be found at the Cochrane Hong Kong website.
- Full Cochrane Review:
- Peer support for people with schizophrenia or other serious mental illness.
- Perioperative enhanced recovery programmes for women with gynaecological cancers.
- Registered Cochrane Review Titles:
- Family-based interventions versus standard care for people with schizophrenia.
- Mindfulness- and acceptance-based interventions for improving psychosocial health in stroke survivors.
- Group-based family intervention versus individual-based family intervention for schizophrenia.
- Update of Cochrane Reviews:
- Art therapy for schizophrenia or schizophrenia-like illnesses.
- Loxapine inhaler for psychosis induced aggression or agitation.
- Telephone consultation and triage: Effects on health care use and patient satisfaction.
- Consultation liaison in primary care for people with mental disorders.
Training and Collaborations
Cochrane Hong Kong provides local and regional training for existing and potential Cochrane authors and users of Cochrane evidence to support the development of Cochrane’s membership. Cochrane Hong Kong has successfully held a series of training workshops including the Cochrane Systematic Review Development Workshop (7-8 January 2019) and the Post-symposium Workshops of the First Cochrane Hong Kong Symposium (27-28 May 2019). The workshops helped enhance participants’ knowledge and skills in understanding, interpreting, using and producing Cochrane Reviews, provide a cohesive experience for Cochrane members, and attract new local members to develop the community of Cochrane Hong Kong. We will also organise the Pre-conference Systematic Review Workshops of the Seventh Pan-Pacific Nursing Conference (26-27 May 2021) to celebrate our School’s 30th Anniversary in 2021.
Cochrane Hong Kong also works to facilitate opportunities for networking, collaboration and exchange of ideas with experts, health care providers, policy makers, academics and researchers in evidence-based practice, education, and policy formulation through international multidisciplinary symposiums and conferences. Cochrane Hong Kong held its first symposium themed ‘Paving the Way for and Achieving Excellence in Evidence-informed Health Care in the Belt and Road Regions’ on 23-24 May 2019. More than 700 participants from over 20 countries or regions attended the symposium. The symposium provided a multidisciplinary platform for discussion on strategies in advancing the use of reliable evidence, especially Cochrane evidence, to inform practice and policy formulation for health care. It also actively facilitated the connection establishment and promoted the work of Cochrane within hospitals, universities, government agencies and stakeholders in the Belt and Road regions.
Please visit the Cochrane Hong Kong website regularly for reports on our past events and announcements of upcoming training workshops and academic activities.
