A glance of the Third Competition for Cochrane Evidence Translation and Dissemination

The Third Competition for Cochrane Evidence Translation and Dissemination

From August to November 2023, the Third Evidence-Based Medicine Translation and Dissemination Competition, hosted by the Simplified Chinese Translation and Dissemination Working Group of the Centre for Evidence-Based Chinese Medicine at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, was successfully held. The competition was jointly organized by the Centre for Evidence-based and Translational Medicine at Wuhan University, in collaboration with all affiliates of the Cochrane China Network. 

We warmly welcomed participation from all Simplified Chinese users who are passionate about disseminating and applying high-quality medical evidence. The competition featured two distinct categories: one for text-graphic submissions, and another for short video submissions. This year marked a record-breaking number of submissions, with a total of 94 submissions received from across the country.

Our esteemed panel of judges, comprising experts from the Cochrane China network, were invited to evaluate these submissions. The competition was dedicated to advancing the knowledge translation of evidence-based medicine, aiming to enhance the communication and application of high-quality evidence in China.

Title: Smoking cessation for improving mental health

Quitting smoking does not worsen mental health, instead, it’s beneficial for the improvement of depression, stress and anxiety.

 

Through an inventive father-son dialogue about the negative impacts of quitting smoking, this entry naturally introduced evidence-based themes. It adeptly captured the public's most pressing concerns, presenting them from a relatable perspective. This approach significantly enhanced readers' understanding and acceptance of the systematic review, making complex medical evidence accessible and engaging.

In presenting its results and conclusions, the work stood out for its clear and concise delivery of quantitative data. Additionally, the diversity in its presentation forms, including original audio and graphics, catered to a wide range of reader preferences. This variety not only made the information more accessible but also showcased the creators' ingenuity in design, effectively engaging a broader audience with varying needs and interests.

Title: Low glycaemic index or low glycaemic load diets for people with overweight or obesity

 

This submission adeptly addressed health and dietary issues of public interest. It began by posing research questions based on these concerns and then delved deeper, layer by layer. The content was brought to life through engaging typography and appealing food imagery. By connecting with everyday dietary habits, the work introduced research perspectives that contrasted with common public beliefs, effectively sparking the readers' curiosity. 

 

At the end of the work, the author quoted the picture of Chinese Food Guide Pagoda(2022) and elaborated in their own language on the inspiration of the review for daily diet, demonstrating the creator's understanding and reflection.

Title: Non‐pharmacological interventions for sleep disturbances in people with dementia

 

The overall design of this work masterfully balanced the appeal of popularization with a visually stunning effect. The harmonious blend of text and imagery was both playful and childlike, transforming professional knowledge into something easily digestible. The strategic use of various fonts, sizes, colors, and styles effectively highlighted key points, making the content not only systematic but also comprehensive. This thoughtful design approach ensured that complex information was conveyed in an engaging and accessible manner.

In the part of findings, the use of pie chart and list achieved conciseness and clarity. In general, the work reached visual communication popularization of science greatly.

At the beginning of the video, a rhetorical question was raised to query the widely recognized viewpoints of the public, stimulating readers' curiosity to further explore. Then, low-carbon dietary methods were introduced, cleverly eliciting the review knowledge. The visuals were comfortable and smooth, vividly conveying professional knowledge.

 

The work has a unique form of expression, interspersed with hand-drawn texts and images, full of wit and humor. Additionally, it showed the phenomenon that the media news worshiped and promoted low-carbon diets before the narration of the review, making a striking contrast, which was impressive to viewers.

Title: Inventions for myopia control in children: a living systematic review and network meta-analysis 

 

The work narrated from what was myopia, how to control it, and then transitioned to the review, outputting professional knowledge from shallow to deep, which was close to real-life situations and easy to understand. 

 

This work explained some abstract concepts with vivid pictures, allowing even the general population without medical knowledge to understand the conclusions of the article well. Soft tones of blue and green created a clean, bright look. The video made the professional review into visual interpretation, with amazing science popularization and great dissemination.
